How to Personalize Your 3D Printed Cards with One Simple Trick

paint your 3d prints

Have you ever wanted to 3D print a card and then just given up wondering… how do I sign this thing?! I’ve been there too! Traditional pens and markers don’t always play nice with the textured surface of a 3D print. But don’t worry—I’ve got a super easy solution that works every time: Mod Podge.

Yep, that classic crafting staple comes in handy for more than just decoupage. With just a thin layer, it creates a smooth finish on your 3D printed surface, making it perfect for writing names, heartfelt messages, or even adding a little hand-drawn flair.

How to Make Your 3D Printed Cards Writable

Here’s my quick step-by-step process to get that perfect writable finish:

  1. Design Your Card – Use Tinkercad to create your custom 3D card.

  2. Print Your Card – Choose any color filament and print like usual.

  3. Paint with Mod Podge – Apply a thin, even layer of mod podge https://amzn.to/3H84CTb across the surface where you want to write.

  4. Let It Dry – Wait 10–15 minutes for it to fully dry and set.

  5. Write Away! – Use an acrylic paint pens https://amzn.to/45e7g3N to add names, messages, or doodles.
