This lesson will take anywhere from 3-4, 45 minute lessons, depending on the extensions that you have your students complete.

Day 1 – Students will learn about physical and chemical changes and then will complete an experiment (or watch provided video) and discuss whether it is chemical or physical.

Students will complete rotations and decide whether they are chemical OR physical changes.

Additional Materials Needed:

  • Play-doh
  • Wax paper (cut into squares. I cut off about 12 inches and then cut that into fourths ~ 6in x 6in)
  • Baking Soda
  • Vinegar
  • Pipette
  • Steel Wool (in a cup)
  • Rusted Steel Wool (in a cup) – Leave steel wool half submerged in water in a cup at least overnight.
  • Fresh Milk (in a cup)
  • Sour Milk (in a cup) – Leave milk in a cup out of the refrigerator at least 24 hours in advance.
  • Tin Foil for top of cups
  • Fresh Milk (in a cup)
  • Vinegar (in a cup)
  • Spoon
  • Cups for each experiment
  • 2 Graduated Cylinders (1 labeled milk, 1 labeled vinegar) – If you do not have access to graduated cylinders, then make a line on the side of a cup labeled milk, and a line on the side of a cup labeled vinegar and students can measure that way.
  • Bubble Wrap – Cut into small squares, enough for each student
